Szöveg: Capt. Péter Kiszely | 2016. július 20. 15:15UN medal parades are held twice a year in the sectors and at the Headquarters of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (HQ UNFICYP). The UNFICYP Medal is awarded to peacekeepers with a minimum of 90 days duty in Cyprus.
Several Hungarians were among those honored for their service to the cause of peace in Cyprus at the UNFICYP central ceremony (Summer Medal Parade) held on 7 July and the Sector 4 medal parade that took place on 11 July.
At the UNFICYP Summer Medal Parade on 7 July, Elizabeth Spehar, the newly appointed Special Representative of the UN Secretary General (SRSG) and Head of Mission, UNFICYP Force Commander Maj.-Gen. Kristin Lund and the ambassadors of troop contributing nations accredited to Nicosia awarded the medals to the peacekeepers.
During the Sector 4 medal parade, it was the Force Commander, the senior leaders of the HQ UNFICYP and diplomatic and military representatives of contributing nations that presented the recipients with the medals.
UNFICYP Force Commander Norwegian Maj.-Gen. Kristin Lund is due to complete her assignment in Cyprus at the end of July, so for her, the sector-level medal parade was also a special event because it was her last visit to Famagusta before her departure.
The UNFICYP Medal was introduced in March 1964 to recognize the peacekeepers serving in Cyprus.
