Meeting Between the Chief of Defence and the President of the Republic

In his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Hungarian Defence Forces, the President of the Republic of Hungary pays special attention to issues concerning the HDF. The Chief of Defence regularly updates the Head of State on current issues relating to the Hungarian Defence Forces. President of the Republic Dr. Pál Schmitt received Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő in his office in the afternoon of Tuesday, April 26.

At the meeting, President of the Republic Pál Schmitt and Gen. Tibor Benkő, Chief of the MoD Defence Staff discussed the provisions of the recently signed new fundamental law concerning the President and the Hungarian Defence Forces. Gen. Benkő informed the President about how the ‘Kálmán Széll’ Plan affects the present service pension system of professional soldiers.

The Chief of Defence said the service members understand that the current economic situation calls for modifications in the pension system. It is important that throughout their career, professional soldiers, who devote their lives to the service of the homeland feel that they are ‘taken care of’. The enlisted personnel should have a proper military career model and be assisted in the process of reintegration into society.

President Schmitt and Gen. Benkő discussed in detail the soldiers’ service and living conditions, the requirements set by the HDF, the special nature of the military profession and several international examples. They pointed out that in a certain respect there seems to be a similarity between the military profession and professional sport.

The Chief of Defence reported the effect of budgetary freeze (sequestration) on the training activities of the Hungarian Defence Forces and the daily life of the troops.
The President of the Republic informed Gen. Benkő about issues related to national defence that were raised on his official visit to the Czech Republic.
