NATO’s history, told through posters

Szöveg: honvedelem.hu / nato.int |  2015. augusztus 21. 10:24

Posters reflecting the spirit of NATO in the past have been published on the NATO website for the first time. This unique artwork collection includes posters created in-house and items donated to NATO by various organisations and private individuals. Gathered together in the History section of the NATO website, the five new galleries are titled ‘Paix et Liberté’, ‘How NATO Works’, ‘Uniforms’, ‘Anniversary’ and ‘Afghanistan’.

The Italian style and influence are evident in the ‘Paix et Liberté’ series, produced in 1951 by the non-governmental organisation ‘Peace and Freedom’ from San Remo, Italy.

The ‘Uniforms’ collection was originally used as a tool to teach forces in Allied countries how to recognise each other’s military attire. The Army Education Centre in the United Kingdom asked each NATO member state for a poster showing uniforms, insignia and rankings in the 1950s. This series of posters was produced in the early 1960s.

Another set of posters that began as an educational tool is ‘How NATO Works’. This collection from the 1950s and 1960s shows how visual explanations were used at a time when the organisation was less known.

‘Anniversary’ marks NATO’s 10th, 30th and 40th birthdays with artwork spanning from the 1950s to the 1980s.

The more recent ‘Afghanistan’ (2009) section chronicles through photography the work of international forces and Afghans during the NATO-led ISAF mission. The posters were designed by the NATO Graphics Service.

These latest additions are a welcome accompaniment to the largest poster collection, ‘The Marshall Plan’, created in the 1950s.
