Lt.-Col. László Gangler – the acting commander of the HDF Pápa Air Base as of August 1 – is already familiar with Pápa Air Base and the position of base commander.

After graduating from the ‘Kilián György’ Aviation Technical College in 1988, Lt.-Col. Gangler started service as a headquarters ground control intercept (GCI) in Pápa. During his more than 18-year time in service, he worked in many positions, for example, as the acting commander of the air base between 2004 and 2006.

From 2007 on, following a six-month tour of duty as chief of staff with the third rotation of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT-3) in Afghanistan, he was posted until 2012 to the Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC), Italy as a senior officer in charge of airspace management and planning.

During his military career, Lt.-Col. Gangler has participated in many courses and training programs. He received a summa cum laude MSc degree in military leadership (Air Force) from the ‘Miklós Zrínyi’ National Defence University in 2001.

In his speech, the newly appointed commander said he wanted to set an example, while also noting that he expects honest and hard work from the personnel of the base.

On August 1, two squadrons of the Pápa-based Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW) had a change of leadership. Having completed his command tour, Lt.-Col. Tom-Ivar Punsvik (Norway) passed command of the Command and Control Squadron to Lt.-Col. Bengt Friberg (Sweden). In the same ceremony, Cpt. Cdr. Costel Gavrila (Romania) relinquished the flag of the Logistic Support Squadron to Lt.-Col. Kjell-Arne Nilsen (Norway).
