Airmen serving in special positions of Air Force units recently executed parachute jumps during a training session organized by the HDF Joint Force Command and the HDF Pápa Air Base.

The training event was special in several respects. Firstly, because this was the first time that the paratroopers had jumped from a C–17 aircraft of the Pápa-based Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW), and secondly because they used the new MC–6 parachutes with round canopies whose troop trial is still in progress.

Previously, such jumps could only be executed with foreign, most often American crews. This day, however, was fully serviced by the paratroopers of the Hungarian Defence Forces. The jumpmaster responsible for controlling the jumps was SSgt. Krisztián Gazsó, a paratrooper from the Search and Rescue (SAR) Service of the HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base. SSgt. Gazsó finished the Jump Master course in the USA as a prerequisite for the C–17 aircraft. The assistant jumpmaster was Lt.-Col. Lajos Nagy, a senior airborne officer from the HDF Joint Force Command.

On the training day, the 21 Hungarian airborne troops had two opportunities to jump. Besides the paratroops of the HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base, the other participants of the training included those of the HDF 59th Dezső Szentgyörgyi Air Base, the Special Parachute Training Team of the helicopter base and the paratroopers of the Air Search and Rescue (SAR) Service.
