The ISIK 2015 personnel recovery (PR) exercise is being held at Konya Air Base, Turkey and the military training areas around it between March 30 and April 10. The exercise involves Hungarian, Turkish, American, Spanish and Romanian troops.

The An–26 aircraft carrying a group of nine Hungarian soldiers took off from the HDF 59th “Dezső Szentgyörgyi" Air Base, Kecskemét in the morning of Monday, March 30 and landed in Turkey after a nearly four-hour flight.

In the next ten days, in cooperation with troops of other nations, the Hungarians are executing personnel recovery tasks. Their group consists of well-trained soldiers familiar with forward air control and personnel recovery missions. Working in an international environment under the realistic conditions of the exercise, the Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs) are tasked to control aircraft flying Close Air Support (CAS) and Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) missions as well as direct offensive air operations. The members of the PR team are practicing how to plan, organize and execute recovery of isolated personnel in areas of operations by internationally recognized standard procedures.

The personnel recovery capability of the Hungarian Defence Forces will be implemented in a three-year complex program between 2016 and 2019, but the capability generation and training already started in 2013. Since then, the designated soldiers have regularly participated in exercises and courses.

The goal of international cooperation is to make sure that every nation can conduct operations in a standardized PR system, using standard procedures by the same principles. This September, a large-scale personnel recovery exercise will take place at the HDF Pápa Air Base in Hungary, involving some 30 aircraft and hundreds of troops from 11 nations.
