Following his official meetings, Péter Szijjártó first went to the UNFICYP Headquarters in Nicosia, where he had informal discussions with Head of Mission Lisa Buttenheim, and was shown the now disused terminal of the former Nicosia International Airport, which houses the headquarters of UNFICYP.
In what followed, the delegation headed by Péter Szijjártó was accompanied by Lt-Col. Zoltán Csatári, the commander of the UNFICYP Hungarian contingent on a tour to a section of the buffer zone that has divided the Republic of Cyprus from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus for more than 40 years now. The program continued in Camp Szent István in Athienou, where 39 members of the 77-strong Hungarian contingent are serving together with six Serbian peacekeepers.
While being shown around the camp, the Minister was informed about the Hungarian soldiers’ role in the mission, and was introduced to the peacekeepers’ accommodation and living conditions.
