As part of the contingent, six members of the Serbian rotation joined the Hungarians preparing for the mission. During the one-week academic training, the Serbian soldiers are given a comprehensive picture of the UN peace operations, the historical and political background of the Cyprus conflict, the mandate and structure of the mission and the tasks of Sector 4. The program also includes voice procedures for radio contact, negotiating skills and media training, of course all in English.
Like on previous pre-deployment training courses, Sgt. Robert Morris from the Force Military Police Unit (FMPU) serving in Cyprus helped the work of the Training Centre. With his assistance, the personnel under training obtains up-to-date information which makes it significantly easier for them to integrate into the mission later and take over the tasks smoothly.
On July 7, UNFICYP Force Commander Maj.-Gen. Kristin Lund visited the personnel of the 38th UNFICYP rotation. The general has been Force Commander in Cyprus since August 2014. During the visit, the major-general was given a comprehensive picture of the activity of the training centre and its task in national and international training. She inspected the personnel preparing for the foreign mission while they were being drilled in the use of procedures needed for task execution in the area of operations (crowd riot control, patrolling, observer duties). Within the preparation of staff officers, she saw the training in negotiation techniques and put questions to the Serbian personnel, those preparing for military police positions and the trainers about the training and their earlier mission experience.
The closing exercise of the 38th UNFICYP rotation will take place in the Táborfalva military training area of the HDF Bakony Combat Training Centre between July 13 and 16. The objective of the closing exercise is to assess the personnel and provide them with opportunity to demonstrate their preparedness, the knowledge and skills they acquired during the last three weeks.
