With funding received from the Embassy of Italy, a cemetery for fallen WWI Italian soldiers has been restored in Zalaegerszeg.

On Wednesday, 15 June Mayor Zoltán Balaicz went on a site survey in the cemetery, accompanied by Ambassador of the Republic of Italy to Hungary Maria Assunta Accili Sabbatini and Zala County Government Commissioner Rózsa Sifter.

In his speech, the mayor told his audience that in 2014, the municipality of Zalaegerszeg and the Italian Embassy in Budapest had concluded an agreement on the restoration of the Italian military graveyard. The renovation of the gravestones, the paving of the area around the memorials and the restoration of the greensward was completed last month. The Embassy funded the municipal project with EUR 8,000 (HUF 2.5 million), and the amount spent on the works done by the municipality and its companies finally totaled at more than HUF 10 million.

The cemetery is situated in the area of a former POW camp in Zalaegerszeg. The majority of the 1656 soldiers buried here are Italians whose mortal remains rest beneath numbered cast stone crosses. The cemetery, however, is also a final resting place of Russian, Serbian and Romanian soldiers, and there is a memorial in its area that was erected to some Jewish prisoners of war. Another renovated obelisk marks a mass grave of unknown soldiers killed in action.
