Mr. Stoltenberg explained how NATO is continuously adapting to current security challenges, including a more assertive Russia and violent instability in Europe’s southern neighbourhood. He noted that NATO plays an important role in fighting terrorism, including through the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan; counter-IED training for Iraqi forces; and support for partners including Tunisia and Jordan.

The Secretary General concluded: “Freedom, democracy and open societies will always prevail over hatred, violence and intolerance. And united behind our common values, there is no threat we cannot face, and no challenge we cannot overcome."

In Rimini, the Secretary General also held talks with Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano. From Italy, Mr. Stoltenberg is travelling to Poland, where he will meet with the national leadership in Warsaw and visit a NATO battlegroup in Orzysz.
