Due to the situation which arose in the second half of 2011 in northern Kosovo, the units of KFOR are placing increased emphasis on rehearsing crowd and riot control (CRC) tasks.

As part of the training series started last fall, a US platoon and a Greek company of the Multinational Battle Group-East (MNBG-E) took part between 3-5 January in a CRC training at Camp Slim Lines, Pristina. The Hungarian company was tasked with training the US subunit, while the Portuguese team with training the Greek company.

At the opening of the event Maj. Gábor Szentes, the Deputy Chief Operations of the HDF KFOR contingent stressed that the objective of the Portuguese–Hungarian tactical reserve (TACRES) Battalion was not to “overwrite" the skills acquired by the two subunits so far, but rather to present the training audience with different tactics and new methods.

All levels of the training program started with a short theoretical session, but the instructors of the battalion gave the main focus on practical training, like they did earlier. During the preparation the trainees learnt individual- and squad-level techniques, the rules for using the riot shield and the baton, and practiced some efficient nuts and bolts of collective movement and action of the squad.

The second and third days of the training event focused on practicing platoon-level action, the integration of vehicles into the platoon formations, and finally on the company-level action.

MNBG-E Deputy Commander Col. Richard Kumlin inspected the closing day of the training program, and spoke highly of the instructors of the Portuguese–Hungarian tactical reserve battalion (KFOR TACRES Battalion) in thanking them for their work. He pointed out that they intend to organize several joint training events in the future, in order to ensure even more efficient cooperation between the battalion and the subunits of the MNBG-E in case they need to conduct live operations.
