Hungarian soldiers have been keeping the peace in Cyprus for 21 years now, so this is the longest-running peacekeeping mission of the Hungarian Defence Forces. Recently the 36th rotation of the Hungarian contingent has started working on the divided island of the Mediterranean Sea.

The troops of the 36th rotation recently traveled to Cyprus, led by contingent commander Lt.-Col. Imre Kovács. They had one week to complete the handover-takeover process between the two contingents. During this time, Lt.-Col. Márton Szász, outgoing contingent commander introduced them to the expectations about the mission, the lessons learned and the special significance of the peacekeepers’ duties.

At the end of the handover-takeover process – which was supervised by a committee from the HDF Joint Force Command – the change of command in the contingent also took place. Lt.-Col. Imre Kovács now has 77 Hungarian and seven Serb soldiers under his command, who serve at the UNFICYP Headquarters in Nicosia, at the contingent HQ in Famagusta and in the Hungarian Camp Szent Istvan (Athienou).

During the first staff meeting, the new contingent commander said that throughout his one-year tour of duty, he would always strive to be able to do his best, maintain good relations with the soldiers of other nations and closely cooperate with the Slovak commander of Sector 4. Besides, he wishes to pay special attention to all members of the contingent; at the same time, however, he sets strict professional standards for them.
