Strategic Airlift Capability C-17 training flights over Lake Balaton 8 October 2016.

On 8 October 2016 a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III long-range military cargo jet of the Strategic Airlift Capability Heavy Airlift Wing based at the Hungarian Defense Forces Pápa Air Base will perform three training flights over Lake Balaton and the surrounding region. The route for the flights will be Pápa – Somlóvásárhely – Keszthely – Tihany – Veszprém – Pápa.

The purpose of the flights is training to maintain the proficiency of the C-17 flight crews to perform operational airlift missions as required by the 12 member nations of the SAC program. The 8 October flights provide training opportunities for the C-17 crews in flying low-level navigation missions as a part of the planned training program for the year 2016.

The C-17 aircraft and other assets of the Strategic Airlift Capability are owned by NATO on behalf of the 12 SAC member nations. The nations share the cost of the SAC C-17 operations and training of the aircrews in proportion to their share of operational flight hours in the program.

The 8 October flights are carried out utilizing C-17 flight hours designated for training of SAC aircrews according to the training plan approved by the SAC nations.
