Zrínyi Miklós University of National Defence has launched a program titled ‘Science and Security’, the aim of which is to inform society about the achievements of military sciences, and develop the researches carried out at the university – announced the university at a press conference held in the institution on Thursday.

In the course of its joint research&development and innovation programs, Zrínyi Miklós University of National Defence has cooperated with 12 small and medium-sized enterprises, 3 universities, and 4 national authorities in five successful projects. The university has good relations with the municipalities, the police, the Hungarian Customs and Finance Guard, disaster prevention organizations, and the Defence Forces as well. There are many threads connecting the results of R&D in the field of military science with the world of economy, society, and innovation.

Colonel (eng.) Prof. Dr. József Padányi, Vice Rector for Strategy and Institution Development and acting Vice Rector for Science, the official responsible for the professional aspect of the project, said that the purpose of the program series is to broaden the portfolio and ensure the sustainable development of the university. As he said today the public knows only a little about military engineering sciences, and their utilization in the civilian sphere has not been properly emphasized – as an example, he mentioned the development of unmanned aerial vehicles by the university, and the researches carried out in the field of information security.

Lieutenant Colonel Attila Demeter, the project coordinator also emphasized at the press conference that the primary aim of the project is to liven up the scientific life of the university and increase the number of students. The lieutenant colonel also mentioned that from September 2009 until June 2011, they will host almost 90 events, which will be supported by modern technical achievements in order to inform the widest audiences: the university will organize road shows, conferences, a scientific club for students, it will launch a specialized course in engineering, open specialized exhibitions, and operate an electric newscast.

The two-year project started on Thursday with the Institutional Conference of Scientific Student Clubs (ITDK). Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Zoltán László Kiss, Associate Professor said that the conference was attended by the students of Zrínyi University and the representatives of a number of foreign partner institutions. Presentations were held in the field of security and defence policy, national security, law enforcement, the air force, and fire prevention, among others.

The next event of the project will be held on November 24 under the title ’Robotic Warfare’, and on the 26th there will be a conference on further development opportunities in geoinformatic support.
