Under the supervision of Hungarian trainers, a one-and-a-half month close quarters combat (CQC) training program has been launched for US soldiers serving in Kosovo.

Acquiring the techniques of military close quarters combat (CQC) is not only an important element in the preparation of Special Forces. It comprises training in basic self-defence and combat methods that all soldiers need to know how to use if necessary. Experience in the field of a given martial art is clearly an advantage, but one should not forget the fact that CQC is more than a sport, as it is about life-or-death fighting in live combat situations. Here you cannot make any mistakes and you have no chance to correct a badly executed movement by repeating it. Moreover, there are no umpires to stop those who flout the rules. The goal is to use techniques that are quick, simple and have no frills that are usually used in sports to make them more spectacular. Last but not least, the techniques must be effective and easy to acquire.

During the CQC training, besides various attack and defensive drills, great emphasis is placed on developing the individuals’ physical and mental stamina.

Since early October, Hungarian trainers have been conducting military CQC training sessions twice a week in Kosovo. At the request of the American partners, three instructors have been nominated from Delta Company of the 13th rotation of the Hungarian KFOR contingent (KFOR-13 HUNCON) to be in charge of the training sessions. Sgt. Ferenc Radóczi, Cpl. Mátyás Dóka and Cpl. Szilárd Dóka introduce the use of basic self-defence techniques to the participants, from hand-to-hand combat to the use of cold weapons. Sgt. Radóczi told us that the American soldiers’ fighting morale is high at the start of the training, they are persistent and enthusiastic.
