May 17, 2011 is a sad date of the Hungarian Defence Forces. On that day, two soldiers of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team, posthumous Lt. Orsolya Róth and posthumous Lt. András Dálnoki lost their lives in Afghanistan in the line of duty, in a fatal traffic accident near Mazar-e Sharif.

The troops of the Hungarian Defence Forces serving in Northern Afghanistan recently commemorated this tragedy that occurred four years ago. At the commemoration, Capt. Richárd Bartha, the commander of the HDF Force Protection Team recounted what happened on the day of the tragedy. He said that the two Hungarian soldiers who died in the accident had served with the 39th Infantry Battalion of the HD 5th “Bocskai István" Infantry Brigade, just like most members of the currently deployed contingent. He added that several of those present served in Afghanistan back then too.

Following the commemorative speech, the soldiers lit candles by the heroes’ memorial wall.

On behalf of the Train Advise Assist Command North (TAAC-N), Col. Gábor Lőrincz and Col. Péter Balogh lit candles in remembrance of the deceased.
