When the Earth Shakes…
Szöveg: kormany.hu | 2012. június 20. 9:10The residents of the province had not even finished repairing the damage caused by floods and avalanches when another natural disaster struck. On June 11 the earth started shaking in the north-eastern region of Baghlan Province, Afghanistan.
The north-eastern part of Baghlan Province – the area of responsibility of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT) – was shaken by an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale. The village of Sahya Hazara suffered the severest damage because the earthquake set a hill in motion in the mountainous area, and the ensuing landslide destroyed 25 houses.
Based on information received on the spot, 69 residents of the village died in the disaster; five were injured and several locals went missing. A number of aid organizations and rescue teams deployed technical equipment to the scene to help with recovering the victims’ bodies entrapped under the earth. While the governor was going around to see the disaster-stricken area, the Hungarian soldiers were discussing with local leaders and people the possible ways of delivering aid. “Our hearts are filled with pain, silent grief and despair. We are living in tents, there is no food and drinking water around, and we have no proper health care available. Most of our arable lands have been devastated, so we have to start the agricultural work again from scratch", the surviving residents of the village told us.
