One Meter and the Challenges

The activities of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), the French (BARKHANE) COIN operations and the European Union Training Mission Mali (EUTM Mali) are now starting to produce results in Mali. These days the trained battalions of the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa), in close cooperation with the BARKHANE units, have set out to intensively eliminate terrorist and separatist groups. Although the population is surprised by the positive processes creating peace and security, MINUSMA is satisfied with them.

The Soldiers of the Future

The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) organized a countrywide recruitment and selection at 15 different cities in July 2013. Members of the civilian population were recruited for officer training whereas the active-duty soldiers were selected for participation in staff officer, officer professional development and NCO training courses. Besides providing financial support, the European Union Security Sector Reform Mission (EUSEC) also contributed its members serving at the offices in the country, who actively participated in organizing and managing the recruitment drive, the exams and the evaluation process.

Hungarian Artillery Training in Congo

The courtyard of Camp TP, located at the seat of South Kivu Province, is resounding with French command words. Maj. Béla Lökösházi – a member of the advisory mission of EUSEC RD Congo drawn from the artillery battalion of the Tata Infantry Brigade – is giving a battle skills training for 12 soldiers selected from the close support artillery battalion of the 10th Military District.

Is the Situation Unchanged in South Kivu?

By assessing the security situation, we can conclude that there is a relative calm in the Congolese province of South Kivu, but the crime rate and the activity of other armed groups have been on the rise in the recent period.

Forthcoming Changes in the EUSEC Mission

The current mandate of the advisory mission in Congo runs until September 30 and sets the course of action for the mission until then. Nearing the expiry of the mandate, in 2013, like in every other year, the authorized council of the EU will review the activity of EUSEC RD Congo and transform the mission accordingly.
