Forthcoming Changes in the EUSEC Mission
Szöveg: Col. Attila Král | 2013. július 12. 14:19The current mandate of the advisory mission in Congo runs until September 30 and sets the course of action for the mission until then. Nearing the expiry of the mandate, in 2013, like in every other year, the authorized council of the EU will review the activity of EUSEC RD Congo and transform the mission accordingly.
The whole mission will end in September 2014. Until then, in line with the progressive attainment of the goals, the offices will be merged and closed. Consequently, the troop strength of the mission and the member states’ rate of contribution will be reduced as well.
The office in South Kivu will cease operating as an independent element, and will transfer its tasks to the office in North Kivu. Some staff of the office to be closed will end their tour of duty and the rest will be deployed with mobile training and advisory teams.
They still have a lot of work to do, however, until the office is closed. Among other things, they need to continue supporting the creation of safe storage conditions for the weapons and ammunition handed in. The EUSEC is responsible for this task in the province.
The EUSEC mission has supported the construction of a recently completed ammunition depot and an armory at Camp Nyamunyunyi, and the refurbishment of another armory at Camp Saio. During the handover-takeover ceremony of these rooms, the 10th Military District Command expressed its pleasure at seeing that from now on, civilians need not concern themselves about the safe storage of dangerous weapons and ammunition.
