Is the Situation Unchanged in South Kivu?
Szöveg: Col. Attila Král | 2013. július 17. 9:43By assessing the security situation, we can conclude that there is a relative calm in the Congolese province of South Kivu, but the crime rate and the activity of other armed groups have been on the rise in the recent period.
A sad example of this is the recent ambush on a convoy carrying Pakistani peacekeepers in Walungu Province, carried out by an armed group which has previously not been known. Unfortunately, one of the peacekeepers was killed in the ensuing firefight. The international community unanimously condemns the attack, and the UN Secretary General has declared it to be an unprecedented incident and a war crime.
By an earlier UN resolution, a multinational ad hoc maneuver force will be set up from South African and Tanzanian troops among others, with the mission of neutralizing the various armed rebel groups and militias.
The EU mission in Congo has an advisory rather than an operational role. In line with this, the FARDC recently organized an EUSEC-supported fact-finding inspection tour to units stationed in the garrisons of Bukavu, Luvungi, Luberezi and Uvira in the 10th Military District. The inspection committee examined matters related to personnel, finance, human resource management and logistics.
