The Goal Is Safe Storage of Weapons and Ammunition

The action program of the European Union’s EUSEC RD Congo mission gives priority to rebuilding the currently “ruinous” logistic system of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC). Creating safe conditions for small arms storage is part of this program, since there is a huge amount of weapons and ammunition in the area of the country – and it is not only the soldiers and the military installations that have them.

It is known on an international level that sexual crimes have become a kind of “weapon” during the ongoing conflicts in the provinces of Eastern Congo, i.e. South and North Kivu. Unfortunately, a large number of these crimes are committed by the troops of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC).

The armed conflict affecting two eastern provinces of Congo is still continuing. Since its formation in March 2012, the political-military rebel group “M23” has occupied some large areas in the part of North Kivu bordering Rwanda and Uganda.
Rotation in the EUSEC RD Congo Mission

The Hungarian Defence Forces have been participating in the EUSEC RD Congo mission for years, with two personnel in each rotation. On completing his tour of duty, Lt.-Col. Mihály Nyitrai handed over the responsibilities of his position to Maj. Béla Lökösházi, who came from the HDF 25th Klapka György Infantry Brigade.
