Orderly Hungarian–Serbian Military Relations

At the invitation of Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende, Serbian Defence Minister Dragan Šutanovac recently arrived in Budapest. The high-ranking guest and the delegation headed by him were received at a ceremony with military honors on Friday, May 27. Following the reception, the two defence ministers had closed-door talks. After the plenary session, Csaba Hende and Dragan Šutanovac met the representatives of the press.

Military Oath is Binding for a Lifetime!

On May 5, 120 soldiers – including four servicewomen – who had completed their basic training at the Hungarian Defence Forces Central Training Base took their ceremonial military oath in public, before representatives of the HDF units and the mayors of the sub-region of Szentendre. Since the transition to an all-volunteer force, this has been the second occasion when the enlisted personnel – who joined up in March – had the uplifting experience of taking an oath of allegiance to the Republic of Hungary, this time on May 5 in Szentendre. MoD Administrative State Secretary Lajos Fodor and Lt-Gen. Zoltán Orosz, Deputy Chief of Defence were also present at the public oath-taking ceremony and addressed the troops.

Soviet-Hungarian Pair of Astronauts Visits MZNDU

On Wednesday, April 20, two world famous astronauts paid a visit to the Miklós Zrínyi National Defence University (MZNDU). The organizer of the event was the Special College for Security Policy. On the 50th anniversary of Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin’s historic space flight, military officer cadets of the university met with Bertalan Farkas, the first Hungarian astronaut, and Valeri Kubasov, the commander of Soyuz 36 that carried them into space. Prof. Col. Klára Kecskeméthy Siposné, the MZNDU deputy rector for education greeted the two spacemen who shared their personal experiences with the audience.

Polish and Hungarian – Two Good Friends

A memorial service for Lech Aleksander Kaczyński, the Polish president who lost his life under tragic circumstances exactly one year ago, and further 95 victims of the air crash was held at 15.00 on Sunday, April 10 in Szombathelyi Square, in the 11th district of Budapest. MoD Parliamentary State Secretary Dr. István Simicskó, Polish Ambassador Roman Kowalski and Dr. Lászlóné Csúcs, the chairwoman of the National Municipality of the Polish Minority also attended the commemoration held at a memorial tree planted on the day when the victims had been buried. Every participant – including the residents of Kelenföld–Albertfalva – paid tribute to the victims by bringing flowers and tealights.

What a Soldier can do for his Comrades in the Name of the Living

The ‘International Commission of Control and Supervision’ Branch of the HungarianVietnamese Friendly Association held a wreath-laying ceremony with military honors on April 7 in Farkasrét Cemetery, Budapest to commemorate the tragedy that happened 38 years ago  on April 7, 1973, at 11.45 am  when border guard Major Aurél Dylski (34) and reservist Captain Csaba Cziboly (33), who had been serving with the International Commission of Control and Supervision (ICCS) in South Vietnam, lost their life in the line of duty. The Branch organized the commemorative ceremony to pay tribute to the fallen heroes, strengthen the spirit of camaraderie and the unity of those who took part in the mission, and to pay respects for the soldiers serving in similar international missions.

Head of MoD Cabinet Office Receives Cross of Honor

It has been a tradition for several years that on József day the municipality of the 8th district of Budapest presents awards to the finest and highly respected notables, including leading scholars, artists, service providers, and those who have been earning good reputation for Józsefváros through their activities and life-work. This year the award ceremony was held on March 19 in the banqueting hall of the Hungarian National Museum, where the members of the municipality of Józsefváros and the notables living in the 8th district were also present.

On the occasion of March 15, Hungary’s national holiday, MoD Parliamentary State Secretary Dr. István Simicskó delivered a speech and handed over medals and commendations at a central award ceremony in the Ministry of Defence. MoD Administrative State Secretary Lajos Fodor, Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő, Chief, HDF Defence Staff, MP Zsolt Csampa, Deputy Chairman, National Assembly Defence and Law Enforcement Committee as well as several MoD leaders and generals were also present at the event held on March 11.

Five-party meeting on the construction of the 3D radar

At a five-party meeting held on March 9, the Ministry of Defence informed the representatives of parliamentary parties on the location and construction of the third element of the radar system. Hungary will benefit from the investment, which does not incur extra costs, meets the requirements of the military profession, is accepted by NATO, and may be completed by the end of 2013 (this schedule includes procedures for obtaining the relevant permits).

Appointment and Promotion of Generals

On the occasion of the approaching national holiday, President of the Republic of Hungary Dr. Pál Schmitt promoted and appointed generals on March 4 in Sándor Palace. Defence Minister Csaba Hende, Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő, Chief of MoD Defence Staff and MP Dr. Máté Kocsis, Chairman, Defence and Law Enforcement Committee, National Assembly were also present at the event.

Students of UK Defence Academy Visit Hungary

Between January 31February 4, 2011, a group of students from the Advanced Command and Staff Course of the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Defence Academy of the United Kingdom paid a visit to Hungary in the framework of their international and regional security studies. The delegation included officers from the UK, Australia, Germany, Denmark, Canada, Sweden, Spain, Finland, as well as Afghanistan, India, Georgia, Yemen and Saudi-Arabia.
