It has been a tradition for several years that on József day the municipality of the 8th district of Budapest presents awards to the finest and highly respected notables, including leading scholars, artists, service providers, and those who have been earning good reputation for Józsefváros through their activities and life-work. This year the award ceremony was held on March 19 in the banqueting hall of the Hungarian National Museum, where the members of the municipality of Józsefváros and the notables living in the 8th district were also present.

Based on the Act on Local Governments, the municipality of the 8th district  Józsefváros  adopted a decree on introducing consistent rules for awarding decorations in Józsefváros to honor people with outstanding achievements. In this spirit, the Freeman of Józsefváros title, the Cross of Honour of Józsefváros, the decorations For Józsefváros, For Good Sports, and the Golden Wreath of Józsefváros were awarded on March 19.

In his short introduction, Mayor Máté Kocsis  the chairman of the National Assembly Defence and Law Enforcement Committee – said that although he is young, it is elevating for him as awarder to look up to the awardees, and it is all the more elevating to see that they heartily welcome this kind of childlike respect from someone who is getting older. He emphasized that the municipality openly intends to institutionally unite the names of the decorated citizens with that of Józsefváros, since they live and create lasting works in that district. And that is exactly why they have been nominated for various awards. The municipality awarded the 2011 Cross of Honor of Józsefváros to graphic artist Magda Marton, designer-graphic artist Tibor Piros, literary historian Béla Pomogáts, and Dr. Gábor Szarka, Head of the Ministry of Defence Cabinet Office.

The municipality of Józsefváros founded the decoration Cross of Honor of Józsefváros in 1991. It is awarded to Hungarian and foreign individuals with outstanding achievements made in the interest of Józsefváros, on the basis of their life-work. The award is accompanied by a memento, a work by artist Éva Kiss.

The Freeman of Józsefváros title was awarded to Liszt Ferenc Award-winner musician Tibor Tátrai, who has been living in the district for more than thirty years. Mayor Máté Kocsis presented the For Józsefváros Award to two, the Golden Wreath of Józsefváros to five, and the Medal For Good Sports to another two citizens.
