A magyar hadizászlóknak a Kossuth-díjas szerző által e kötetbe rajzolt története exkluzív módon jeleníti meg Magyarország históriáját 800-tól napjainkig. Három jól elhatárolható korszakot vetít elénk: – az ősmagyar zászlók (800–1000) az Atilla-nemzetség fő zászlajának turul totemállat-ábrázolásától a fejedelmi Árpád-dinasztia vörös-ezüst sávos jelképéig terjedő korszakát, majd – a Magyar Királyság (1000–1800) időszakának keresztény szimbolikáit. E korszak fő zászlómotívumai a vörös-ezüst Árpád-sávok, a vörös alapon zöld hármas halmon álló apostoli kettős kereszt, valamint Szűz Mária, a Magyarok Nagyasszonya. – Végezetül a XVIII. század vége, amikor is megszületett háromszínű zászlónk, a nemzeti trikolór az addigi címer vörös-ezüst-zöld színeiből. Ennek címeres állami, címer nélküli nemzeti és farkasfogas katonai változatai jelentik a magyar zászlót napjainkig. Az eredeti szemlélettel, művészi látásmóddal alkotott mű az „EGY EZREDÉV HADBAN” sorozat legfrissebb tagjaként a szimbolika, vexillológia felől közelítvén bontja ki teljességében a magyar történelmet.

The story of the military flags of Hungary told in this book by the Kossuth-prize winning author represents the history of Hungary from 800 A.D. until today in an exclusive way; it displays three distinct eras: – the era of the ancient Hungarian flags (800–1000) from the depiction of the “Turul” totem animal on the main standard of the Atilla clans to the red and silver striped coats of arms of the ruling Árpád-dynasty; – the period of the Kingdom of Hungary (1000–1800) with its Christian symbolism. The main flag motives of this era are the red-silver Árpád stripes, the apostolic double cross on top of a green triple mound over a red background and the figure of Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Hungarians. – finally, the end of the 18th century, when our three-colour banner, the Hungarian national tricolour was born, using the red, silver and green colours of the national coat of arms. Its variants mean the Hungarian flag; the state flag if decorated with the coat of arms, national flag without the coat of arms and a military flag with the colours placed in a “wolf tooth” pattern. Created with an original approach and an artistic view, this album unfolds Hungary’s history in its entirety from the aspects of symbolism and vexillogy, published as the latest volume in the book series “A Millennium in the Military”.
