The MoD Department for International Cooperation recently invited the members of the Budapest Military Attaché Corps (BMAC) to a marksmanship competition for the 21st time. The traditional pistol and assault rifle target practice for military attachés was at once a competition, where they had a chance to show their skills in three rounds at Püspökszilágy range on Tuesday, April 29.

Every year since 1994, the traditional marksmanship competition for defence, military and air attachés accredited to Budapest has been held in April or May, on the range of the HDF vitéz Szurmay Sándor Budapest Garrison Brigade.

This year it was Lt.-Col. Tibor Csipszer, the acting chief of staff of the HDF vitéz Szurmay Sándor Budapest Garrison Brigade and Maj. Géza Boros-Leskó, the base commander of the Püspökszilágy range who received the attachés arriving for the range day. The program started with a detailed briefing about the rules of the marksmanship competition and the strict safety regulations. In the first round, following a short but detailed technical introduction, the attachés fired AK–63 assault rifles.

According to the rules, the attachés had to fire five sighting shots and then ten competition shots with assault rifles at targets placed at a distance of 100 meters. In the first event, Romanian attaché Col. Iuliu Lucaci achieved the highest scores.

The weapon of the second round was the P9RC Parabellum pistol. The attachés fired these pistols to hit targets placed at distances of 25 meters. By the scorecards, Russian Col. Ivan Lutsyshin was the best pistol shooter.

After this there was a duel, in which the attachés formed pairs to measure their skills against each other. This was the liveliest and at once the most difficult event of the competition, because it started with a 100-meter run, and continued with a target practice where the competitors fired at targets placed at distances of 200 meters, which was made even harder by the sudden gusts of wind. In this round, Col. Lucaci was the most successful competitor again.

By the overall results, this year it was Col. Ivan Lutsyshin again who took the challenge cup home, thereby securing the winning streak which the Russians have been on for years.
