The objective of the Warrior-program is to make sure that the military lessons learned in the battlefield – which came during many years at a price of losses and sacrifices – are not lost and can be fully utilized in the armed defence of Hungary”, Minister of Defence Csaba Hende said at Újdörögd on May 9.

which is to end soon, the seasoned Hungarian troops, who have already been engaged in
firefights in Afghanistan, would train all soldiers of the Hungarian Defence Forces who are
supposed to lead small units in the event of an armed conflict.
“For instance, they have just demonstrated to us how to set up an ambush professionally. This
is one of the state-of-the-art elements of military tactics", the Minister of Defence added.
Answering a question from the press, the trainers of the HDF 34
Forces Battalion told us that the participants of the experimental course have come from
various units with different levels of experience.
We were told that the trainers “mixed" the personnel at the beginning of the course, so that
the more experienced ones can help their less experienced comrades. We were also told
that the trainers are satisfied with the results – the participants of the course “have mastered
the skills of executing the planned tasks by employing small unit tactics (SUT) in difficult
situations and circumstances". The trainers added that the requirements of the course
realistically reflect the battlefield conditions of our age.
Answering our question, Col. Dr. Péter Lippai, the deputy commander of the HDF 5
“Bocskai István" Infantry Brigade told us that according to plans, the currently running
infantry course would be integrated into the Warrior-program as one of its qualification
courses. “The training audience on the course included several volunteer operational
reservists over 50 as well", stressed the deputy commander.
During the program held at the Újdörögd base of the HDF Bakony Combat Training
Centre, the representatives of the media were shown a professionally executed ambush. The
objectives of an ambush are to interdict a hostile reconnaissance party, to neutralize part of
its personnel and military equipment, and to demoralize the enemy and gather intelligence
from them. The task was assigned to squads 1 and 2, which set up an ambush to attack and
neutralize a hypothetical enemy convoy.
Based on hands-on training in more than 80 per cent, the Warrior-program is a four-week
experimental course aimed at renewing the general military and tactical training in the
Hungarian Defence Forces and at improving the military leadership skills of officers and
NCOs.
