Discussion Between Hungarian and Greek Chiefs of Defence

At the invitation of the Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, Gen. Mikhail Kostarakos, Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő, the Chief of the Defence Staff paid a visit to Greece on September 10–11. At the meeting, the two partners discussed a number of current issues in the military relations of the two countries and the joint tasks to be executed in the framework of the Alliance.

Gen. Tibor Benkő was received by Ambassador Eszter Sándorfi at Elefsis Air Base. The Chief of the Defence Staff then laid a wreath by the tomb of the unknown soldier in Athens. After a welcome ceremony with full military honors, the Hungarian general was received on a courtesy call by Greek Deputy Minister of Defence Fofi Gennimata in the Greek Ministry of Defence.

At the plenary talks led by the two Chiefs of Defence, Brig.-Gen. Ferenc Korom, Operations Chief of the Defence Staff briefed the Greek partner on the current operational role of the Hungarian Defence Forces and the expected changes in it.

During the discussion, Gen. Kostarakos listened with interest to a report on the work of the Hungary-based NATO Center of Excellence for Military Medicine (MILMED COE), apropos of which Tibor Benkő has invited his Greek partner to visit the Center so he can learn more about its activities. At the talks, the two Chiefs of Defence agreed that there is a need for further intensifying the existing military cooperation, for which the opportunities should be continuously explored.

On the second day of his visit, Gen. Tibor Benkő visited the Headquarters NATO Rapid Deployable Corps – Greece (HQ NRDC-GR) in Thessaloniki, where met with Commander NRDC-GR Lt.-Gen. Ilias Leontaris, who gave a comprehensive briefing on the mission and capabilities of the military organization.

In conclusion, the Hungarian Chief of Defence visited the Mobile Air Operations Coordination Center (AOCC-GEO).
