Hungarian Chief of Defence Pays Visit to Mons in Belgium

Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő, the Chief of the Defence Staff paid an official visit to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE, Mons, Belgium) on December 12.

The main goal of his visit was to present, on behalf of the President of Hungary, the “Commander’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit with Star, Military Division" to Admiral James G. Stavridis, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), who is also Commander, U. S. European Command (USEUCOM).

The President of Hungary awarded the decoration to Admiral Stavridis in recognition of his personal assistance and efforts made to further Hungary’s interests and of his support to the contribution of the Hungarian Defence Forces in NATO-led operations.

The meeting provided the participants with an opportunity to hold discussions on the current state and future of the C-17 Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) which is stationed in Hungary.

During his visit to Mons, the Chief of the Defence Staff met István Kovács, Hungary’s Permanent Representative to NATO and Maj.-Gen. János Varga, National Military Representative as well as the Hungarian soldiers serving at SHAPE. As part of the official program, Gen. Tibor Benkő was provided a guided tour of the Comprehensive Crisis and Operations Management Centre (CCOMC).
