Col. Mark M. Karas, the defence attaché of the United States of America presented Combat Infantry Badge awards to ten soldiers of the HDF 34th “Bercsényi László” Special Forces Battalion in Szolnok on Thursday, October 30.

The award – which was founded in World War II – is given by the US military according to very strict criteria. Since 2008, several Hungarian soldiers have received the Combat Infantry Badge for their performance in special operations in Afghanistan. The Hungarian Defence Forces started developing the Special Forces capability of the HDF 34th “Bercsényi László" Special Forces Battalion in 2005, with substantial assistance from the United States of America in the fields of materiel, training and equipment. Over the last nine years, this capability of the Hungarian Defence Forces proved to be successful many times on international exercises and during NATO-led operations in Afghanistan.

Drawn from the HDF 34th “Bercsényi László" Special Forces Battalion, the HDF Special Operations Detachment was declared “combat ready" on October 16, 2014. The Hungarian unit is the fifth one in Europe to have attained this qualification.

Based on the “combat ready" qualification, the Hungarian Special Forces, declared to NATO at the Wales Summit, are ready to deploy anywhere if needed, within a specified notice period.
