MoD Administrative State Secretary Lajos Fodor was also present in Tápióbicske at the scene of a re-enacted key battle of the 23rd Spring Memorial Campaign. Held on Monday, April 4 – the anniversary of the battle fought in 1849 – the program started with a Mass celebrated for the fallen heroes and continued with a wreath-laying ceremony and commemoration at the memorial of Alajos Színi Sebő.

Monday morning was devoted to commemoration and wreath-laying ceremonies in Tápióbicske where – as part of the 23rd Spring Memorial Campaign – the battle of April 4, 1849 was re-enacted. There was a traditional distribution of rolls in Károly Földváry Elementary School, where Mayor Sándor Kanyó opened the daylong program.

The ceremony continued in the afternoon with the schoolchildren’s bridge “battle", after which MoD Administrative State Secretary Lajos Fodor delivered a speech on the wooden bridge. The state secretary first expressed his appreciation and thanks to all those who enabled the event to take place. “Recalling our glorious history as well as honoring and preserving our military traditions are especially important national tasks, because if we don’t know our past, we cannot understand the present and neither can we plan our future. It is a great pleasure for me – as the chairman of the Hungarian Hussar and Rider Heritage Association – to see the young members of these heritage groups, who believe in the importance of re-enacting our history in their free time" – said the MoD Administrative State Secretary.

Lajos Fodor added that the Revolution and War of Independence of 1848–49 is one of the formative events in the modern history of Hungary, a cornerstone of our national identity. The Battle of Tápióbicske, fought during the glorious Spring Campaign, was one of the most beautiful feats of arms of the 1848–49 War of Independence, where the generals’ decisions, the perseverance of the personnel of the Hungarian Defence Forces, individual heroic deeds and the fortuitous combination of circumstances all added up to victory.

In what followed, the state secretary briefly recalled the events of the battle, and the military heritage groups held a battle demonstration.

After the parade, the guests attended a “live history lesson" on the bank of the Tápió stream, where the Battle of Tápióbicske – that ended with the victory of Hungarians 162 years ago – was re-enacted, narrated by Military Historian Dr. Tamás Csikány.
