The HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base hosts some scenes of Ice Age 2, which is a disaster film in the making, starring John Rhys-Davies and Iván Kamarás among others. The takes in which – thanks to the digital technology – we will see in the film a Mi–8 helicopter of the Hungarian Defence Forces circling around the top of Eiffel Tower are being filmed here too. Our crew visited the location of shooting on Friday, November 9.

According to the storyline, a volcanic eruption in Iceland triggers the disaster, which is spreading like a chain reaction and leads to a new ice age through climatic upheaval. Basically, the actors of the film are fleeing from the ice which covers everything, Iván Kamarás told us. He is playing the part of a meteorologist professor in the film. The actor is happy to have been cast a positive part this time, and to be able to take part in this production which would not be possible without the support of the Ministry of Defence and the Hungarian Defence Forces, as he pointed out.

Iván Kamarás has also announced a charity offer: having learnt about the destiny of a large military family, he decided to renounce his fee for playing the part in the film in favor of soldiers with large families. The HDF Social Policy Public Foundation receives the generous donation and uses it in accordance with the actor’s request.

Known from the Lord of the Rings, John Rhys-Davies is playing the part of a NATO colonel who is to retire soon, but finds himself in the middle of events quite unexpectedly. “It must be a matter of greatest amusements for real soldiers to see pretend-soldiers", the actor told us about the shooting in Szolnok. We have got some impression of the previous evening from the interview too, as he told us that he had been given some drinks with unpronounceable names, and was reassured that they are conducive to health. He even came to believe this after three or four glasses, John Rhys-Davies added jokingly. According to the author, the Hungarians are a great people, so he always comes with pleasure to Hungary – a country that he visited 28 years ago for the first time. He said he had enjoyed the time spent here very much, and thanked the personnel of the base for making their stay so pleasant.

“We’ve received an incredible amount of help from the soldiers", Ádám Neményi, the Hungarian producer of the film said to support the actors’ positive impressions. As for the shooting in Szolnok, the producer told us that they had to “roll over a helicopter for one of the scenes". Stuck in the ground, the wreck was in a disastrous condition indeed, with the rotors removed and the fuselage powdered with some artificial snow. On the first day of shooting they deployed an An–26 too, since the actors of the film escaped from the “Ancsa" through the lowered ramp of the transport aircraft. The producer told us that the film was being made for the American cable televisions, and would presumably reach Hungary via television broadcast or on DVDs.
