Apart from patrolling and various operational tasks, “Charlie” Company of the HDF KFOR Contingent operating as part of the Portuguese–Hungarian KFOR Tactical Reserve Maneuver Battalion (KTM) has the main mission of giving “Fire Phobia Training” to the troops of KFOR nations arriving in the Kosovo area of operations. The Hungarian peacekeepers hold these training sessions in English, and the international community appreciates their high professional standards.

Known in military training as fire phobia or pyrophobia, this practice is a special and spectacular part of the crowd riot control (CRC) branch of the peacekeepers’ training. During the dynamic phase, the soldiers are drilled in the postures, techniques and procedures which help them reduce to the minimum the impact of improvised incendiary devices (petrol-filled bottles) that are classed as lethal weapons.

It is perhaps even more important that the training provides them with opportunities to overcome the anxiety caused by the instinctual fear of fire, and greatly helps to build cohesion among the soldiers of small units as well. While conducting the training, the soldiers have their comrades look after their bodily integrity, because immediate professional reaction reduces the risk of injury to the minimum.
