To the Memory of the Heroes

On the occasion of All Souls’ Day the Ministry of Defence commemorated the soldiers of Hungarian and other nationalities, who died a hero’s death, with wreath-laying and candle-lighting ceremony on Tuesday, 30th October.

The wreath-laying ceremony began in the New Public Cemetery at the sculpture of the "Praying Soldier" erected in memory of the Hungarian soldiers. The commemorating congregation paid tribute at the former Italian military graveyard, at the World War I Memorial, and at the gravesites of the Polish, Turkish, Romanian and Soviet soldiers. The wreath-laying ceremony was attended – among others – by Brigadier General Ernő Baráth, the Commander of the HDF vitéz Szurmay Sándor Budapest Garrison Brigade, Colonel Dr. Tamás Csikány, the head of the Doctoral School of Military Sciences of the Faculty of Military Sciences and Officer Training, of the National University of Public Service (NUPS), and the members of the Budapest Military Attaché Corps.

The All Souls’s Day commemoration continued in the Budaörs German-Hungarian cemetery. Brigadier General Ernő Baráth and Colonel Dr. Tamás Csikány paid tribute to the memory of the soldiers, fallen in World War II, resting in the cemetery. At the Central Monument established on the outskirts of Budaörs wreaths were laid on behalf of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany by Lieutenant Colonel Uwe Patz, the exchange and liaison officer of the HDF Joint Force Command delegated from the Bundeswehr, Mr. Imre Kalóczi, the Vice Mayor of Budaőrs and Mr. András Zsák, the staff member of the Budaőrs Mayor’s Office. Ms. Olívia Schubert, the President of the National Self-Government of the Germans in Hungary, and György Boros, the President of the Budaőrs German Nationality Self-Government also bowed their heads at the Monument.

The memory of the soldiers killed in the war was honoured in Solymár, in the Commonwealth War Cemetery, where the English, American, Australian, South-African, French, Canadian, Polish and New-Zealand soldiers buried in our homeland were remembered. The heroes of Polish origin were honoured by Colonel Tomasz Trzcinski, the Defence and Air Attaché of the Republic of Poland. The South African soldiers were remembered by Mr. Pumla Nene, the First Secretary of the South African Republic. On behalf of the United States of America Colonel Donald R. Baker, the Defence Attaché, on behalf of the Canadian Embassy Counsellor Mr. Peter Kolakovics placed their wreaths. After placing the wreath of the British Embassy at the Central Monument, Brigadier General Ernő Baráth and Colonel Dr. Tamás Csikány, and also Dr. Kálmán Szente, the Mayor of Solymár commemorated the war heroes.
