Hungarian, Belgian and Norwegian EOD technicians have recently attended an Initial EOD Staff Officer Training (IEODSOT) course of the joint EU Battle Group of the Visegrád Four countries in Szentendre. The two-week course is organized by a mobile training team (MTT) of the NATO Explosive Ordnance Disposal Center of Excellence (NATO EOD COE).

The course objective of the intensive two-week IEODSOT conducted by an MTT of the Slovakia-based COE is standardization of the procedures used in militaries of different EU member countries. The course is designed to promote multinational cooperation, which is a great help for soldiers nominated to participate in joint NATO- or EU-led operations in the future. During the two weeks in Szentendre, the staff officers learned how to plan, prepare, command, control and coordinate EOD/IEDD operations. The course had two components, so after the lectures, a staff exercise (STAFFEX) and a map exercise (MAPEX) were held this week, where the attendees had opportunity to show how they can put into practice what they had learned.

The course has a graded curriculum, so the EOD technicians can progress from simple to complex tasks. By the end of the training, they learn what priorities they need to focus on as EOD officers and what types of events they may encounter during an operation.

The most important tactical-level exercise of the course was held on March 5, when the soldiers simulated a work at a battalion headquarters. In line with the tasks, the attendees had to plan and coordinate the work of EOD teams. Finally, they prepared a report and gave recommendations to their superiors.
