„We have to remember in order to be able to understand how valuable peace and Hungarian freedom are, because our task is to preserve and pass on this peace”, stressed Dr. Gábor Szarka. The Cabinet Chief of the Ministry of Defence delivered a speech on February 13 at a ceremony commemorating the end of the battle for Budapest in World War II.

The Ministry of Defence, the local government of the 1st district and the HDF Military History Institute and Museum held a joint commemoration in Buda Castle, by the memorial plaque on Maria Magdalene tower.

Gábor Szarka reminded the participants that “Two empires, two totalitarian dictatorships were fighting each other here in the name of two horrible ideologies, disregarding all civilized rules of war in the spirit of raw violence, while struggling to gain control of the country. Two nights without daylight", Gábor Szarka quoted Dezső Sulyok’s words.

“We have to remember those who did not have a chance to live an ordinary life in Germany, Russia, Transylvania or in Hungary, because as soldiers, their fates ran together here, in one of the most hopeless battles of World War II. They fulfilled their duty for their homelands in this battle. We have to remember the heroes, the soldiers of the university assault battalion and the Buda Volunteer Regiment who made the supreme sacrifice for the Hungarian homeland. We have to remember those who fell victim to the invaders’ violence, and those who were willing to fight to protect the persecuted ones and to lay down their lives if needed. We have to remember in order to be able to understand how valuable peace and freedom are, because our task is to preserve this peace", the Cabinet Chief said.

The participants laid wreaths by the memorial plaque on the Maria Magdalene tower, then proceeded to hold a commemoration by the memorial tablet of the university assault battalion.
