The commemoration began with a holy mass in the Csólyospálos Roman Catholic Church, then it continued in the public cemetery. János Á. Fúrús, the Mayor of the Village of Csólyospálos greeted the gathering. From his speech we learned that the idea of the grave-renovation was raised two years ago, and was suggested by Sándor Lezsák, and supported by the National Forum Association as well.
During the ceremony held in the Csólyospálos Cemetery, the Deputy Minister stated that we do not make a difference between the soldiers resting in the territory of our homeland, the sons of each nation deserve the final rest. In the spirit of the mutual respect and collaboration we wish the same for our heroes resting in a foreign land.
Mrs. Afonina Alla, the Counsellor of the Embassy of the Russian Federation said: “More than seventy years separate us from World War II, however these events do not get very far from us, they are etched into the heart and mind of the people. Nearly one hundred thousand Soviet soldiers are resting in the territory of Hungary, from among them some sixty thousand are unknown. Such commemorations warn us not to let the horrors of war be repeated".
Sándor Lezsák Deputy Speaker of the Parliament in his speech stressed that the deceased soldiers are not enemies, therefore they should be given the final respect, which we rightly await, and rightly receive all over the world. “This is the day of the joint forgiveness, the joint grief, the joint commemoration and the joint prayer" – pointed out the Parliamentary Representative of the area. The graves were newly consecrated by Parish Governor József Gál along with military honours, then a wreath-laying ceremony followed.
At the monument of the unknown Hungarian and Soviet soldiers who lost their lives in World War II Szilárd Németh, Sándor Lezsák, Á. János Fúrús, Afonina Alla and Col. Maxim Vorobjev, the Military and Air Attaché of the Russian Federation, and Róbert Lenkei, the representative of the Bács-Kiskun County Assembly bowed their heads. The commemoration was closed with the sounds of Szózat, performed by the Csólyospálos Tambura Ensemble.
