Chairman of EU Military Committee Visits Sarajevo

Gen. Patrick de Rousiers, Chairman, European Union Military Committee (EUMC) visited the headquarters of Operation EUFOR ALTHEA in Sarajevo on April 23. Besides the military representatives of Austria and Romania, the general was accompanied on his official journey by Maj.-Gen. László Domján, military representative of Hungary (HDF Office of Military Representative).

At the start of the program, Maj.-Gen. Johann Luif, Commander, Operation EUFOR ALTHEA and his experts reported about the security situation and the challenges of the operation. Among the experts, Brig.-Gen. András Szűcs, EUFOR Chief of Staff – who is about to complete a 14-month tour – also reported on his work, so the experiences he shared helped to understand the situation.

The participants of the discussion agreed that Operation EUFOR ALTHEA has an important role in the stabilization process of Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) and in establishing a safe and secure environment. To attain this goal, the main focus is on supporting the capacity building and training of the armed forces of BiH.

The delegation held a discussion with the EU Special Representative who gave information about the results of the latest elections and the ongoing efforts of the EU.

The Chief of the General Staff of the armed forces of BiH thanked EUFOR ALTHEA and the troop contributing nations – including Hungary – for the support they give to the military. He requested further assistance from the nations, above all in the development of military equipment, and assured Gen. de Rousiers of the BiH armed forces’ commitment to the ongoing developments and their intention of exploring the possibilities to participate in EU-led operations.

During the eventful program the delegation took part in a medal parade of the troops completing their six-month tour. At this ceremony, eight Hungarian soldiers received ALTHEA medals together with the service members of six other nations. Maj.-Gen. László Domján personally pinned the medals on the uniforms of some soldiers.
