The members of the Hungarian peacekeeping contingent deployed in the Sinai Peninsula recently commemorated the foundation of the Hungarian state.

The inner ceremony of the Hungarian contingent was held on August 20 in the North and the South Camps. Speaking at a ceremonial staff meeting in the North Camp, Lt.-Col. Géza Ócsai, Contingent Commander gave a speech of welcome, pointing out that August 20 represents a number of traditional values which are important to every soldier.

At the ceremonial staff meeting, it was announced that Police 1st Lt. Orsolya Horváth and Police 1st Lt. Hajnalka Gárgyán have been promoted to captain. In recognition of their sustained and outstanding work in their positions and their professional merits, WO Sándor Zadravecz received the silver grade of the Service Medal and WO Róbert Kovács received the bronze grade of the Service Medal.

The new bread, which had been baked in the camp, was consecrated at a reception.

In the South Camp, Maj. Zoltán Sándor, Station Commander delivered a speech of welcome. He said that the “bread baked from this year’s wheat was “the tangible result of conscientious work", and thanked the personnel for their positive attitude.

On the following day, the Hungarian contingent organized its national day in MFO. Maj.-Gen. Denis Thompson, Force Commander, Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) pays special attention to creating harmony among the contingents and to understanding and respecting one another. One forum for the realization of these goals is the system of national day programs.

Arrangements for this day had started several weeks earlier with a fever of excitement, as this day is the Hungarians’ biggest yearly event in MFO. Within this, around 120 persons were invited to a reception which was held inside the officer’s mess in the North Camp, where the hall was decorated with the Hungarian tricolors in honor of the event.

In the international bar of the MFO South Camp, the menu also included Hungarian dishes like goulash, paprika chicken and even “Lúdláb" cake. The arrangements already aroused a lot of interest, as enthusiastic Hungarians dressed in traditional costumes were cooking the food in kettles.

August 20 is soon going to be followed by another important event in the peninsula, since the 37th Hungarian rotation is about to bid farewell and the 39th one is expected to arrive.
