In July, a command post exercise was held in cooperation with American soldiers in the Hódmezővásárhely garrison of the HDF 5th “Bocskai István” Infantry Brigade.

While getting ready for the NATO CREVAL, the staff of the battalion-sized Infantry Battle Group (IBG) drawn from the Hódmezővásárhely-based 62nd infantry battalion started to train for a tactical scenario prepared by the superior for the autumn Exercise “Brave Warrior 2015" with the use of the Military Decision Making Process (MDMP). Besides the commanders of modules attached to the IBG, soldiers of 4th Reconnaissance Battalion of the US 2nd Regiment – who will also participate in the autumn exercise – were also involved in the task execution.

Cooperation between the two battalions had already started in January in Germany, where both units took part in Exercise “Allied Spirit I" held in the Joint Multinational Readiness Centre (JMRC), Hohenfels.

Although, of course, the US troops will not participate in the CREVAL, they will participate in a 72-hour joint IBG exercise whose tactical scenario is going to be based on the present one. “We are going to form a joint Hungarian–US training IBG for the autumn exercise, one part of which will consist of the Hungarian IBG and the other of the sub-unit and staff delegated by the American partners", Lt.-Col. László Deme, the commander of the 62nd infantry battalion told us.

Lt.-Col. Jonathan Due, the commander of the US battalion told us that for the US Army, the main objective of Exercise “Brave Warrior 2015" is to strengthen relations, gain personal experience and develop cooperative processes on sub-unit level between two important NATO member states. Besides the Hungarian battalion commander and the US deputy battalion commander, the battalion headquarters was also jointly practicing how to prepare and make decisions. As the lieutenant-colonel said, this exercise provided both battalions with an excellent opportunity to develop their capabilities and system of combat readiness. The exercise shows a new way in cooperation with allies, he added.

In addition to Széchenyi-Prize winning mathematician Ferenc Friedler, the decision-making process was attended by Dr. István Heckl, Associate Professor, Pannon University. The two were accompanied by Col. László Garas, Chief of Land Operations and Training Directorate, HDF Joint Force Command. “The aim of our visit is to look into the possible ways of applying the latest optimization techniques during the steps of the MDMP. On this exercise, we realized how complex and many-sided the task was, whose solution requires joint work by soldiers having excellent theoretical knowledge and practical experience", Dr. István Heckl said.

Both parties assessed the training week as successful, because besides processing the OPORD they got to know each other’s way of thinking, the different organizational structures of the sub-units and the tactical capabilities and deployment options of these element.
