Cyprus Set to Begin EU Presidency

Cyprus is going to hold the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union between July 1 and December 31, 2012. To mark the launch of the presidency, the embassies of the Visegrád Four countries organized a concert by the Visegrád Blues Band on June 11 in Nicosia, the capital of the divided island.

Formed in 2004, the musicians of the Visegrád Blues Band are citizens of the V4 countries, including two Hungarians, two Poles, one Czech and one Slovak. The representatives of diplomatic corps, the politicians of Cyprus, the citizens of the four countries living on the island, the leaders of the UNFICYP mission and some soldiers from the Hungarian contingent received invitations to the Nicosia concert by the ensemble.

Anna Tureničová, the Slovakian ambassador to Cyprus opened the event by delivering a speech in which she quoted Robert Schuman, a founding father of the European Union in stressing the importance of cultural cooperation and the unifying power of arts that knows no borders.

Dr. Balázs Botos, Hungary’s ambassador to Cyprus welcomed the invited guests in his mother tongue too, and wished Cyprus a successful presidency.
