The highlight of the morning was the US and the French presidents’ joint paying tribute to the fallen in Colleville cemetery.
In the morning of the ceremony, the flags of both nations were flying on every marble cross in the cemetery. At the stand erected in front of the war memorial of the cemetery, close to 50 veterans were listening to the commemorative speeches, after which US President Barack Obama shook hands with all of his compatriots present.
During the central ceremony in the afternoon, the 9,000 guests of honor had opportunity to experience Europe’s last 70 years, presented with artistic means in a 45-minute program.
The audience gave a big applause to greet the politicians honoring the event with their presence. British Queen Elizabeth II – who had served in World War II – was received with standing ovation.
