The 9th rotation of the Hungarian Defence Forces Special Operations Contingent is nearing the end of its tour in Afghanistan.

The contingent has been in charge of mentoring the Afghan National Army (ANA) 5th Commando Battalion (Kandak). In answer to our question, Contingent Commander Maj. László Tar told us that the Hungarian troops were tasked with providing advice and mentoring in a very complex and difficult operational environment, and the main objectives of their task execution were to develop existing capabilities of the Afghan commando kandak and to generate new ones to address the shortfalls. In order to achieve these goals, there was a need for continuous cooperation between the Afghan and the allied Special Forces, organizations and echelons of command.

The Hungarians’ achievements are evidenced by the fact that after the medal parade, the members of the contingent received commendation by name from Maj.-Gen. Scott A. Howell, Commanding General, Special Operations Joint Task Force – Afghanistan. This high-level recognition also proves the professionalism, skills and strong motivation of the Hungarian Special Forces troops.

According to the contingent commander, occasions like this really showcase the high standards of professional work and training in the HDF 2nd Special Forces Regiment, where the system of pre-deployment training – which is based on lessons learned for many years in real-world operations – provides a solid foundation for deployment with foreign missions.
