Deputy State Secretary Visits Cyprus

Péter Sztáray, the Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) paid a two-day official visit to Cyprus on May 8-9. His entourage included Levente Benkő, the Head of the MFA Department of Foreign and Security Policy and Tas Kelemen, the Head of the Department of Defence Policy, Ministry of Defence. Hungarian Ambassador Dr. Balázs Botos received the delegation in the insular country.

During his official visit, Péter Sztáray was introduced to the Hungarian contingent of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). Following the contingent commander’s report, accompanied by the liaison officers and the platoon leader, he went to Camp St. Stephen in Athienou, where he had an insight into the life of the Hungarian camp. Afterwards he crossed the buffer zone to meet the Hungarian soldiers serving at UN-91 patrol base and to learn about their duties.

In what followed, the Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had an opportunity to tour the Green Line in Sector 2, which is the responsibility of the British contingent.

On May 9 Péter Sztáray held discussions at the UNFICYP HQ and in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus.
