It is our common interest with Ukraine that it must be a strong country embracing democratic, Western values – it was told after the meeting of Defence Minister Tibor Benkő and H.E. Ms. Liubov Nepop, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Budapest on Monday.

The Minister stated that Hungary considers Ukraine a friendly country, not just a neighbour, therefore as we have done earlier, now we are doing our utmost in order to restore security and peace in the country.

Tibor Benkő said that the peaceful, negotiated solution to the crisis in Ukraine as soon as possible, the implementation of the Minsk agreements, the reestablishment of Ukraine’s political and economic stability, and the security of the Subcarpathian Hungarian community are in Hungary’s interest. He highlighted that Hungary will provide all assistance to Ukraine in the future, too, with a view to overcoming the difficulties they now face. At the same time Budapest expects the Ukrainian Government to allow the Subcarpathian Hungarian community to live in peace in their native land, and to guarantee their previously acquired rights to the Hungarian minority – the Defence Minister added. The Minister also drew Madam Ambassador’s attention, that the security of the Hungarians living in Ukraine and their life free of atrocities is a priority for the Hungarian Government.

In the area of the bilateral military-to-military co-operation, we will continue to conduct the exchanges of experiences and to provide the support started earlier, in particular the continuation of medical treatment of the soldiers wounded in the fighting in the eastern-Ukraine, which Madam Ambassador had requested from the ministry leadership at her earlier visit. In complying with the request, the Ministry approved the medical treatment of a further twenty wounded Ukrainian soldiers, and the Minister informed the Defence Minister of Ukraine about this by letter. The decision on the implementation of the many new military-to-military co-operation opportunities raised during the meeting is expected later.
