Hungarian Geo Experts Receive Peacekeeping Medals
Szöveg: honvedelem.hu | 2014. november 15. 9:55On November 7, before the approaching November troop rotation, the Hungarian geo experts serving with the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon attended a staff officers’ medal parade, where they were decorated with medals for peacekeeping, awarded by the UN Secretary General.
The members of the eighth rotation currently serving in Lebanon deployed to the area of operations from the HDF Geoinformation Service (Lt.-Col. Péter Lusták, 2nd Lt. Kornél Varga and 2nd Lt. Mihály Sándor) and from the HDF 12th Arrabona SAM Regiment (WO Szabolcs Benkő).
Since November 2006, Hungary has been contributing four geo experts in yearly rotations to the UN-led mission (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL), which was originally launched in 1978. The Hungarian soldiers are posted at the UNIFIL HQ in Naqoura, where they serve on the staff of the Joint Geographic Information Service (JGIS).
Over the last few years, the professional work of the UNIFIL JGIS has stood out among other GIS organizations operating in UN-led missions, and the work done by the Hungarian geo experts has an important role in this achievement.
