On Friday, May 9 fifty airmen and five Gripen fighter aircraft of the HDF 59th Dezső Szentgyörgyi Air Base flew to Schleswig-Jagel Air Base, Germany to participate in the multinational Joint Air Warfare Tactical Exercise (JAWTEX 2014) conducted there.

The two-week exercise – which started on Monday, May 12 – is organized by the Bundeswehr and involves more than 10 countries. During the sorties, the air crews of the Hungarian JAS–39 Gripens are to fly air-to-air/air-to-ground and close air support (CAS) missions. In addition, the tasks comprise maritime environment missions (flying over the sea) and multiple tactical air support for maritime operations (TASMO) maneuvers.

For the time of the exercise, the airspace of the base located north of Hamburg extends from the Polish border to the Netherlands, facilitating the action of 30-40 aircraft which carry out their assigned tasks simultaneously every day.

The Schleswig base will host the NATO Tiger Meet exercise in June, in which, according to plans, the airmen and fighters of the HDF 59th Dezső Szentgyörgyi Air Base will also participate.
