This year the Norfolk NATO Festival took place again in Norfolk, Virginia. The weekend festivities began on 22 April with a flag-raising ceremony of the 28 NATO member states. The following speeches emphasized the importance of the Alliance and the good relationship between the soldiers serving here and the region.

In recognition of the outstanding role of the Alliance, the governor of Virginia declared 22 April the Day of the NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT). This gesture has enormous significance in a city with long-established military traditions like Norfolk, because in addition to Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest navy base, it also hosts the United States Fleet Forces Command.

The Parade of Nations was held on the second day of the event series. Participating member states paraded with their handcrafted floats, each adorned with the colors and symbols representative of each of the 28 countries of NATO. The nations represented at the ACT had been preparing for the parade for months, and thousands of visitors came to see the event at the festival.

This year the Hungarians took special pride in the fact that the Hungarian float showing the Heroes’ Square at the parade won the prize of the public, which was presented to Col. István Juhász, National Liaison Representative of Hungary to ACT. The Hungarian parade float was made in cooperation with domestic organizations and the volunteering Hungarian representatives in Norfolk.

At the tents of NATO member countries, the visitors to the Festival had opportunity to learn about the member nations’ characteristics and armed forces.
