Hungarians Attacked With RPGs In Afghanistan

One of the liaison teams of the Provincial Reconstruction Team of the Hungarian Defence Forces (HDF PRT) was carrying out a task related to CIMIC control in their area of responsibility when they were ambushed at 11.16 local time, 80 kilometers from Pol-e Khomri, in the Andara Valley in the vicinity of the borderline between Deh-e-Selah and Banu districts – announced István Bocskai, the spokesman of the Ministry of Defence at a press conference on Sunday.

The convoy consisted of four armoured Humvees. The insurgents launched two RPGs against the patrolling motorcade, and one of them hit the bulletproof front right window of the second vehicle in the convoy. The glass absorbed the impact of the projectile, but the splinters caused injuries: two Hungarian troops were injured in the attack, one of them suffered serious injuries, while the other had minor injuries only. The commander of the vehicle, a captain had arterial bleeding in his left arm and his head and arm were wounded, the other soldier who was injured is a contracted corporal, whose left arm and head were injured by the splinters.

Neither of them lost consciousness, the medical staff of the convoy immediately treated their wounds and stabilized their condition. The liaison team requested MEDEVAC support and a helicopter to airlift the two Hungarian soldiers to the German military hospital in Kunduz. In the hospital the corporal received nonresident treatment, and surgery was performed on the captain, his condition is stable. The other members of the team returned to the HDF PRT camp safe, the attacked vehicle also arrived in Pol-e Khomri unaided.
