Based on the directive, the Portuguese–Hungarian KFOR Tactical Reserve (TACRES) Maneuver Battalion deployed in Pristina is in charge of training the Mitrovica-based KSF rapid reaction battalion.
During the pre-training period the KSF specified those topics for which it requested assistance from KFOR. The Portuguese commander of the KFOR TACRES Battalion tasked his deputy, Maj. Gábor Szentes with drawing up the training program. This program was of course approved by the mentor team of the KFOR HQ.
One company officer commanding (OC) and one platoon leader as well as 18 squad leaders of the KSF Battalion attended the training course. The aim of this training was to prepare the instructors of the battalion so that later they can teach the acquired knowledge to their own subunits.
Following the theoretical lessons, the participants of the course took practical sessions, in which the troops of the Hungarian company demonstrated how to set up and operate checkpoints. Maj. Alexander Schmidt, the mentor team leader of the KFOR HQ was also present to inspect the training program. He said the Hungarian peacekeepers focused on practical training, thereby making it much easier for the instructors of the 3rd battalion to do their job at a later stage.
The program continued with a training session on patrolling, held by the Portuguese troops. The third phase of the joint training program, the convoy operations was conducted on December 13 with the Portuguese company in charge of the methodological practice. Maj. Szentes stressed that he considers the KSF training program useful, which is to continue in next year according to plans.
