The military officer cadets of the HDF Ludovika Battalion had no idle time in this summer, as they participated in a multinational exercise in Germany. Together with members of the US Marine Corps (USMC), they supported the Georgia Deployment Program.

Since 2014, this has been the fifth time when the military officer cadets of the HDF Ludovika Battalion supported the pre-deployment training of Georgian infantry battalions in Hohenfels, Germany. The Hungarian cadets completed all phases of a close to one-month Mission Rehearsal Exercise (MRE 17) that took place between 29 July and 24 August.

The officer cadets provided training support for the Georgian 31st Light Infantry Battalion in the interest of its successful deployment in Afghanistan. During the MRE, the Hungarians were playing the role of the Afghan National Army (ANA), while the personnel of the Georgian infantry battalion under training were being mentored by the members of the US Marine Corps, because the Georgian soldiers will co-deploy with the US Marines in support of Operation Freedom Sentinel in Bagram, Afghanistan.

During the exercise, the language and cultural differences between US and Georgian troops
posed a challenge, which set a real context for the circumstances under which they will be cooperating on the Afghanistan mission.

The 89 Hungarian officer cadets were accompanied to Hohenfels by 11 seasoned professional and contract soldiers with mission-related experiences, who were not challenged by the international environment. Most officer cadets have already participated in multinational exercises, and those who experienced it for the first time were also able to successfully overcome the obstacles.

After their arrival, the exercise started with individual training, which was followed by an Enhanced Maneuver Training from squad to company level, during which the soldiers practiced procedures and courses of action. Then, in the third phase, the multinational team transitioned into a seven-day, 24-hour force-on-force exercise.

Thanks to the successful cooperation, starting from this February, the Hungarians are requested by the US partners to participate in MREs twice every year. During these training events, the military officer cadets of the HDF Ludovika Battalion and the NCO candidates of the HDF NCO Academy jointly execute various tasks. The next joint exercise in Hohenfels is scheduled for February 2018, where the Ludovika cadets can learn lessons and prove their skills again.
